In 1419, during the early Ming Dynasty, Emperor Yongle ordered the construction of an inner city wall to protect the imperial city of Beijing, including the Forbidden City. Originally spanning 40 kilometers in length, much of the old city wall has been destroyed over the years to make room for subways, highways and new buildings. Fortunately, parts of the old city wall remain, and beginning on November 25, 2001, the Chinese government began removing all of the shanty houses and other residences and buildings that were built up using the city wall as part of their structures, which may have actually saved this long section of the wall by hiding it in a maze of hutongs (alleyways) for many years. In 2002, the Beijing Ming Dynasty City Wall Relics Park officially opened, displaying the remaining parts of the ancient city wall in a pleasant park that runs in a straight line along the approximately 1.5 kilometer section of the wall that still remains. A reliable Beijing tour company can take you there, with this park making a fascinating compare/contrast site when combined with a Great Wall tour of the ancient Ming Dynasty Wall near Beijing in the same day. It is also very easy to access the park via the Chongwen subway station on the 2nd (loop) line of the Beijing Subway system.

flowers and partial reconstruction add to the ambiance

Parts of the city wall in the park have been reconstructed from the original bricks of the wall that had been “borrowed” by some of the residence owners when they built their own houses along the wall. The grounds of the park have been beautifully landscaped with trees and flowers, making the park especially nice in the spring, summer and fall.

section of old railroad tracks uncovered

During construction of the Ming Dynasty City Wall Relics Park, workers uncovered a section of the old railroad tracks that had actually run through the old wall surrounding the inner city. A hole had been punched in the wall so that the train could pass through, and this section of the old wall has also been reconstructed to its original state.

central sections of the Ming Dynasty City Wall Relics Park

Original sections of the wall combined with sections that have been reconstructed from the original bricks from the wall help to show what the wall would have looked like centuries ago.

more restoration on the western end of the wall

The westernmost section of the ancient wall around the inner city is undergoing heavy restoration, including the restoration of the hole that was knocked through the original wall to allow the railroad to pass through.

Dongbianmen (Dongnan Jiaolou) – The Southeast Watchtower

Dongbianmen, also known as Dongnan Jiaolou (the Southeast Watchtower) served as a lookout point on the southeastern perimeter of the ancient inner city wall. The 100 meters or so of the wall directly west of the watchtower are the original wall, which has survived destruction due to its location adjacent to the watchtower itself.

The Ming Dynasty City Wall Relics Park makes for a nice morning or afternoon visit when the weather is nice. The local government keeps the gardens along the wall in beautiful shape year-round, but it is perhaps at its best during Spring and Fall when the weather is better and the gardens are in full bloom.

The Acropolis, a Unesco World Heritage Site, is one of the most significant and most visited monuments in the world. It was the original fortified ancient “high city” of Athens built on the Acropolis hill, a prominent rock plateau high above the city, with commanding views and an amazing array of ancient architecture dating back to the Classical period of Ancient Greece. The main buildings of the Acropolis are the Erectheion Temple, the Temple of Athena Nike and the famous Temple of Parthenon, dedicated to the Goddess Athena, protector of the ancient city of Athens. The external pillars of the Parthenon are slightly curved to give an optical illusion as being straight when viewed from every angle. Other sites to view are the Kerameikos, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Roman Agora, Ancient Agora, and the nearby Odeum of Herodes and Theatre of Dionysus. There is a museum behind the Parthenon preserving many of the artifacts from the site.

Ancient Agora is the green parkland next to the Acropolis Hill with a very beautiful view of the Parthenon. An Agora was an open place of assembly in ancient Greek times where free-born male citizens would gather for military duty or to hear statements of the ruling king or council. Later in Greek history, the agora served as a marketplace where merchants kept stalls or shops to sell their goods. There is the Temple of Hephaestus, the best preserved ancient Greek temple, the Attalos Stoa and the museum of the ancient Agora.

Odeum of Herodes is a Roman theatre addition to the Acropolis, built in the city around 167 AD and located on the side of the Acropolis hill easily viewed from the front of the Parthenon. Today, concerts are held here and is where the popular musician Yanni recorded his album ‘Yanni Live at the Acropolis’.

Lycabettus Hill is the highest point in the city at 277 m (908 feet) above sea level and is a popular tourist destination for the spectacular view of Athens, the Acropolis, the port of Piraeus and the island of Aegina. At the peak are the 19th century Chapel of St. George, a theatre, and a restaurant. The hill borders the Kolonaki district and can be ascended by walking or by a funicular railway which climbs the hill from a lower terminus at Kolonaki, Aristippou street.

Syntagma Square is located at the centre of the city and is the business district of Athens. Many hotels, banks, shops, restaurants and airline offices are located in the area. The Parliament building faces the square where visitors can view the changing of the guards in front of the Parliament every hour on the hour. Many places of interest to visitors are located relatively close to the Syntagma Square. The districts of the Plaka to the south, Monastiraki to the west, Kolonaki to the east and Omonia to the north.

Temple of Olympian Zeus, once the largest temple in Greece, is a Greco-Roman temple in the center of Athens, southeast of the Acropolis. Construction began in the 6th century BC, but was not completed until the reign of the Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD. Only ruins remain today as the temple would have been destroyed by earthquakes.

Three Island Cruise is a delightful day cruising the beautiful islands of the Saronic Gulf. The cruise stops at Aegina (the first capital of Ancient Greece), Poros and Hydra. Passengers have free time for shopping, swimming or enjoy a drink at one of the many foreshore tavernas. This cruise is very popular and a highly recommended introduction to the Greek Islands.

Cape Sounion is the southern most point of Attica where the white marble pillars of the 5th Century BC Temple of Poseidon stand. Visitors are taken on a scenic drive along the coastal road past the popular beaches of the Athenian Riviera, set against a backdrop of breathtaking ocean views, offshore islands and rugged mountain terrain.

People in ancient Egypt settled and built houses along the banks of the River Nile and evolved from hunters and gatherers to subsistence agriculturists. Egyptians also developed their religion, institutions and a written hieroglyphic language.

This is clearly one of the most impressive early civilizations of antiquity. There is something truly fascinating about Egypt and the land of the Pharaohs.

The Nile, the Egyptians and their institutions had an amazing bond. This was one of the unique features of the ancient Egyptian civilizations. The soil around the Nile brought a copious deposit of rich silt every year from the Ethiopian tableland, making it productive and fertile.

The level of the Nile rose every year in July and continued to do so until the end of August, when the flood was at its highest. Near the end of October, this flood would recede and leave behind a deposit of silt and also streams and lagoons that became natural reservoirs for fish. The Nile returned to its lowest level in April, which is when vegetation started to decrease, seasonal pools dried out and the game would head north. The cycle would begin again in July and repeat itself annually.

Egyptians were the first people to believe in life after death. This is to do with the rise and fall of the river. When the flood waters rose and fell, this meant the land would “die” every year and be “reborn” when the crops grew. Rebirth was seen as natural. The sun also “died” when it set and was “reborn” every day in the eastern sky. Egyptians reasoned that the human life cycle must be similar to the other natural phenomena.

Long distance trade was common in ancient Egypt. Sustained contacts with southwest Asia and very good craft specialization meant that development of towns and hierarchy flourished. A headman, believed to be able to control the Nile flood, had the power and this power rested on his reputation as “rainmaker king”. The Egyptian towns became political centers and trading centers.

When the Black Land of the Delta and the Red Land of Upper Egypt united, this was the most important political event in ancient Egypt. The Black Land of the Delta has dark, rich soil and the Red Land of Upper Egypt is a sun-baked desert.

Horus was the chief Delta god and Seth was the Upper Egypt god. The two god myths had to be combined when their kingdoms were combined. Horus was the son of Osiris and Isis. He avenged the evil Seth’s slaying of his father by murdering Seth. This shows the triumph of good over evil.

Horus took over his father’s thrown and was regarded by the ancient Egyptians as the ancestor of the pharaohs. After the unification, every pharaoh took a Horus name to show he was Horus reincarnated.

King Menes of Upper Egypt, according to tradition, united the two kingdoms, establishing his capital at Memphis. Memphis was known then as the “White Walls”. Some scholars regard Menes as being purely legendary and others believe he was the Horus King Narmer.

Artisans and civil servants worked for the central government in the course of the Early Dynastic Period. They fashioned the sophisticated art traditions and learning that constituted the basic pattern of the ancient pharaonic Nile civilization.

Far and away, the most exciting way to experience Egypt is through a Nile cruise. The ancients may not have known that the Nile was the world’s longest river, but they knew that there was no better place to build their civilization than along its banks.

Cruising along the Nile should be done in a very good quality cruise liner as often trips can be advertised as ‘cruises’ but are often second class river excursions with unsanitary and unpleasant conditions on board. Traveling on, the cruise will eventually come to Thebes, home of one of Egypt’s most famous destinations: the Valley of the Kings. Edfu’s Temple of Horus and Kom Ombo’s Temples of Sobek and Haroeris also await curious travelers cruising the Nile.

The ancient Hawaiians, being of Polynesian influence, were quite knowledgeable in the ways of sea travel. While the first ancient Hawaiians came from other Polynesian islands, those living in Hawaii soon developed their own methods and canoe designs to make traveling from island to island easier. The ancient canoe designs of the Hawaiians included sailing canoes and paddling canoes. Paddling canoes were easier to launch and land. However, canoes equipped with sails were typically quicker and easier to maneuver.

In Polynesia, each section of islands developed their own type of canoe. For the Hawaiian islands, canoes consisted of a deep, V-sided hulls that enabled them to pierce through the waves and navigate the waters even during windy weather. Under the waterline, the ancient Hawaiian canoes sported flowing curvature that not only minimized drag in the water but provided the canoes with a strong, sound base. The Hawaiians were aware that straight lines and basic curves resulted in structural weakness and increased the water’s resistance against the canoe; therefore they avoided both of these elements in their engineering.

Early types of canoe sail were made of fine matting. The matting was cut into strips and sewn into a large triangular shape. The resulting triangular cloth was secured to two spars to produce a sail. In most areas, such as the Cook islands, New Zealand, and Marquesas, the sail shape was an equilateral triangle-one in which all three sides are the same length. Eventually this type of sail was exchanged for a square-shaped one.

As time progressed, changes were soon needed in the shape of the canoe. One drastic change occurred during King Kamehameha’s conquests to unite the islands of Hawaii. His army was often making long trips in canoes that simply couldn’t carry enough supplies and weapons for the journey. To solve this problem, the peleleu class war canoes were developed. These canoes sported a deeper hull and fuller sails that enabled them to sail with or against the wind. They also came equipped with swivel guns and improved rigging.

Eventually the need for long-distance voyages dwindled away as frequent short-trips between the islands gained popularity. It was during this time that canoes became powered by manpower and paddles rather than sails. Early on, the men tasked with the job of paddling were usually the chief’s bodyguards, as they were highly trained and trustworthy. Paddling the canoes made water-travel possible regardless of the wind direction/strength and the current. The bottom of these canoes allowed more of a rounded shape as well as a shallower hull than their predecessors.

As times changed, so did the needs of the Hawaiian travelers. When Kamehameha passed a law that dissolved the boundaries between the island kingdoms, the Hawaiian people were allowed unhindered travel between the islands. This safer method of travel meant that the chiefs didn’t need an entire barrage of bodyguards to paddle the canoes, which in turn meant falling back to the sailing method of canoe power.

The engineering of European ships eventually had a huge impact on Hawaiian water travel. Still, most travelers elected to use canoes for travel and trading between islands all the way into the early 1900′s, long after European-style ships became a common sight in Hawaii.

Are you between the ages of 25 and 35 and want to explore the ancient world? Then sign up for a nine-day tour of Egypt and explore one of the ancient civilizations of human kind. This is a civilization that predates ancient Rome and even ancient Greece. On this tour, you will have the opportunity to visit the pyramids and temples built by the ancient rulers. The main focus of this singles adventure, is to meet other singles in the same age group while visiting the ancient cities of Cairo, Aswan, Edfu and Luxor. Travelling between these cities is an unforgettable aspect of this journey because you experience the scenic train rides in luxury appointed sleeper cabins, and you will also sail down the Nile on a cruise ship. Experience the same picturesque views as Antony and Cleopatra did during their romantic river journeys.

The first stop on your Egyptian tour, is the city of Cairo. This is one of the largest and most populated cities in the world and boasts numerous tourist sites. The most popular of these, are the pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. These are the last remaining remnants of the seven wonders of the ancient world and stands as a testament to man’s ingenuity and determination. Join your potential life partner for a guided tour of these historical buildings. Another popular site in Cairo is the Egyptian Museum where you will be able to view the world’s most complete collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts.

Over the next three days you and the rest of your group of singles will spend travelling on a train between Cairo and Aswan. Experience the romance of old world travel in luxury trains where you can mingle with each other and perhaps strike up a relationship with someone who catches your eye. Once you have arrived in Aswan, you will be able to explore the Ancient buildings commissioned by Ramses II before embarking on what is probably the most romantic part of the journey. This has to be the cruise down the Nile to Edfu and Luxor. Here you can sit on the deck with your new budding relationship and experience the breathtaking views on offer. On arrival in Luxor, you will be able to explore the ancient city of Thebes, which includes the Temple of Luxor.

The cost of this package is $1460 and includes accommodation in hotels, train and cruise ship. The cost also includes seven breakfasts, three lunches and six three course meals. Who knows, by the time you are done with this trip, you might be coming home with that perfect partner.

Rome is a unique city. It is a city where the modern and ancient intertwine. Arguably, Rome is best known for its ancient structures. Yet Rome is also home to some of the most renowned museums in the world. Rome day tours are ubiquitous. However, for a truly unique, distinctive, and environmentally friendly Rome sightseeing tour experience, the perfect choice is none other than a Segway tour of Rome.

The Colosseum held an almost unimaginable 50,000 spectators in its prime. It is the most famed of the key architectural sights to marvel at in Rome, along with the forum and the Circus Maximus. The Pantheon is similarly one of the essential attractions to explore. Created in 125 AD as a temple to the Roman gods, it is intensely striking.

The Vatican Museum is the more than likely first choice for many a visitor, most distinguished, without a doubt, for its world reputed Sistine Chapel. Another choice that will not disappoint is the Capitoline Museums – the longest-established public galleries on earth. The Capitoline contain, along with many other leading world masters, Bernini and Tintoretti’s extraordinary works.

he Modern National Galley, which houses some of the most significant art of the 19th and 20th centuries, is the natural choice for lovers of modern art. You cannot afford to overlook the Borghese Gallery, housed in a lavish seventeenth-century villa. Explore to your leisure 20 rooms of illustrious baroque, antiquarian and Renaissance art.

The Segway possesses a number of environmental benefits over other modes of transport. A Segway is a purely-electric eco-friendly alternative to buses. It can also help to decrease the impact of global warming by reducing greenhouse gas output and the use of imported fossil fuels. Zero-emissions are given off during operation.

Glide through ancient Rome on your personal Segway – offering the most extraordinary way to get around. More rapid than walking, Golden Tours’ enthralling three-hour Segway tour of Rome encompasses the most renowned attractions of the city in an effortless and sweeping fashion, including the Colosseum, Trajan’s Column and Circus Maximus. Your accompanying audio guide will provide you with extensive compelling facts and anecdotes about the past of Rome as you swiftly cruise through the city streets. Your three-hour Rome tour is also limited to a small group, guaranteeing an intimate and unique experience.

Traverse streets upon which momentous historical events have occurred. Travel ancient, antiquarian Rome on a most modern device: none other than on a Segway. Take a Rome guided Segway tour and become enchanted by the charms of this archaic capital. This offers so much more than the average Rome sightseeing tour experience.

The monuments and mysteries of this ancient region have survived for thousands of years, and today remain a top destination for travelers. This historic country is a bridge between Africa and the Middle East, and is home to temples, pyramids, and tombs, as well as bustling modern cities. Egypt vacation packages include not only the ancient wonders of the Pharaohs, but also first class resorts, restaurants, and hotels.

It is difficult to see everything that this country offers in one short trip, and first-time visitors often find that group tours can provide the most value. They frequently showcase Egypt vacations that include airfare and ground transportation, and most feature a guide fluent in your own language. Many people feel more comfortable in a group, and a planned tour can fit the most sights into a limited time frame.

There are literally hundreds of packaged Egypt tours to choose from. First time travelers can narrow down those choices with a little preliminary research to find which may be most interesting personally. Knowing the background of these ancient sites makes a visit more enjoyable, and helps bring history to life. The options and styles of tours include combinations of scenic, historic and even luxury vacations.

The Nile River is the lifeblood of this country, and has sustained this region from the beginning. Nile cruises often begins in Cairo with a visit to pyramids at Giza and Saqqara. Some include side-trips to Alexandria, and often to the Abu Simbel Temple in Aswan. From Aswan, luxury cruises explore the Aswan High Dam before arriving in Luxor, and the fabled Valley of the Kings.

The best time to take a Nile cruise is during the winter months, between October and April. Summers in this desert region are uniformly hot, but the most luxurious cruise cabins are like floating hotels, and feature air conditioning as well as private bathrooms. For those seeking a more authentic experience, travel by felluca, or ancient Egyptian sailboat, is recommended.

Visitors often have the choice of continuing overland to the Red Sea, which features the newest resorts along what is becoming known as the Red Sea Riviera. This developing tourist area is home to ultra-modern luxury facilities, and is well known for its world-class snorkeling and diving. These resorts welcome visitors with a wide choice of activities, and can include meals and accommodations.

Prices range from the luxurious to the budget-conscious, but the sights are the same regardless of the cost. Nearly all tours include assistance upon arrival and departure, and air-conditioned transport to and from airports. Personal beverages, tips and other gratuities are usually not included, and any side excursions via air are the traveler’s responsibility.

Egypt vacation packages offer something for nearly any traveler. Advanced planning is the best way to ensure seeing all the important sights without wasting any time or expense, and makes selecting the best tour package simpler. Once you have decided which locations must be seen, visit one of many websites that feature Egypt travel packages, and find one that suits your travel budget.
