Ming Dynasty City Wall Relics Park
Remnants of the ancient Beijing inner city wall
In 1419, during the early Ming Dynasty, Emperor Yongle ordered the construction of an inner city wall to protect the imperial city of Beijing, including the Forbidden City. Originally spanning 40 kilometers in length, much of the old city wall has been destroyed over the years to make room for subways, highways and new buildings. Fortunately, parts of the old city wall remain, and beginning on November 25, 2001, the Chinese government began removing all of the shanty houses and other residences and buildings that were built up using the city wall as part of their structures, which may have actually saved this long section of the wall by hiding it in a maze of hutongs (alleyways) for many years. In 2002, the Beijing Ming Dynasty City Wall Relics Park officially opened, displaying the remaining parts of the ancient city wall in a pleasant park that runs in a straight line along the approximately 1.5 kilometer section of the wall that still remains. A reliable Beijing tour company can take you there, with this park making a fascinating compare/contrast site when combined with a Great Wall tour of the ancient Ming Dynasty Wall near Beijing in the same day. It is also very easy to access the park via the Chongwen subway station on the 2nd (loop) line of the Beijing Subway system.
flowers and partial reconstruction add to the ambiance
Parts of the city wall in the park have been reconstructed from the original bricks of the wall that had been “borrowed” by some of the residence owners when they built their own houses along the wall. The grounds of the park have been beautifully landscaped with trees and flowers, making the park especially nice in the spring, summer and fall.

Top Things to Do in Athens
When in Athens make sure you don’t miss these Athens highlights.
The Acropolis, a Unesco World Heritage Site, is one of the most significant and most visited monuments in the world. It was the original fortified ancient “high city” of Athens built on the Acropolis hill, a prominent rock plateau high above the city, with commanding views and an amazing array of ancient architecture dating back to the Classical period of Ancient Greece. The main buildings of the Acropolis are the Erectheion Temple, the Temple of Athena Nike and the famous Temple of Parthenon, dedicated to the Goddess Athena, protector of the ancient city of Athens. The external pillars of the Parthenon are slightly curved to give an optical illusion as being straight when viewed from every angle. Other sites to view are the Kerameikos, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Roman Agora, Ancient Agora, and the nearby Odeum of Herodes and Theatre of Dionysus. There is a museum behind the Parthenon preserving many of the artifacts from the site.
Ancient Agora is the green parkland next to the Acropolis Hill with a very beautiful view of the Parthenon. An Agora was an open place of assembly in ancient Greek times where free-born male citizens would gather for military duty or to hear statements of the ruling king or council. Later in Greek history, the agora served as a marketplace where merchants kept stalls or shops to sell their goods. There is the Temple of Hephaestus, the best preserved ancient Greek temple, the Attalos Stoa and the museum of the ancient Agora.
Odeum of Herodes is a Roman theatre addition to the Acropolis, built in the city around 167 AD and located on the side of the Acropolis hill easily viewed from the front of the Parthenon. Today, concerts are held here and is where the popular musician Yanni recorded his album ‘Yanni Live at the Acropolis’.

Ancient Hawaiian Canoes
The ancient Hawaiians, being of Polynesian influence, were quite knowledgeable in the ways of sea travel. While the first ancient Hawaiians came from other Polynesian islands, those living in Hawaii soon developed their own methods and canoe designs to make traveling from island to island easier. The ancient canoe designs of the Hawaiians included sailing canoes and paddling canoes. Paddling canoes were easier to launch and land. However, canoes equipped with sails were typically quicker and easier to maneuver.
In Polynesia, each section of islands developed their own type of canoe. For the Hawaiian islands, canoes consisted of a deep, V-sided hulls that enabled them to pierce through the waves and navigate the waters even during windy weather. Under the waterline, the ancient Hawaiian canoes sported flowing curvature that not only minimized drag in the water but provided the canoes with a strong, sound base. The Hawaiians were aware that straight lines and basic curves resulted in structural weakness and increased the water’s resistance against the canoe; therefore they avoided both of these elements in their engineering.
Early types of canoe sail were made of fine matting. The matting was cut into strips and sewn into a large triangular shape. The resulting triangular cloth was secured to two spars to produce a sail. In most areas, such as the Cook islands, New Zealand, and Marquesas, the sail shape was an equilateral triangle-one in which all three sides are the same length. Eventually this type of sail was exchanged for a square-shaped one.

Time Travel to Ancient
China is known for being a pioneer in many a field, among these for its art-of-war. It then comes as no surprise that the most impressive archaic defense monument known to man lays here. Stretching from Shanhaiguan in the east to Lop-Nur in the west, the legendary Great Wall continues to capture the hearts of thousands of people that visit every year.
The Great Wall of China, one of the greatest wonders of the world, was listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. It stretches somewhere around 8,851.8 kilometers and has a history going back about 2000 years. However some of the sections are now in ruins or have disappeared. Most of the popular sections of the Great Wall are located around Beijing,
Some of the often visited passes are: Shanhaiguan, also known as “the First Pass Under Heaven” that is the section closest to the sea; Jiayuguan is a pass that has served ancient merchants well in the past as an opening to the Silk Road and is still one of the few well maintained areas of the great wall; Mutianyu is a section that has been fully restored and is studded with watchtowers and is the longest restored section; Badaling is the most popular section and is the best preserved. Each pass offers uniquely jaw-dropping panoramas from atop one of the most incredible man-made structures of all time. The Simatai Great Wall section is a section of the original wall that is more than 400 years old. This wall climbs the steep Simatai Mountains and offers more breathtaking views but hiking along its trail is considered an accomplishment.
Nevertheless, hiking is what is recommended to observe the Great Wall in its full glory, with visitors ideally exploring one section of the wall a day to receive a true traveler experience. It is great for photography, and although certain periods are recommended for visiting, each season has its own perks, from the spring when the wall sits in lush vegetation to winter time when the back drop is a jaw-dropping mass of stark white.
The Ancient Greeks Got Around
The city-states of ancient Greece are much admired. Part and parcel to any great civilization, transportation constituted a pivotal pillar of the Greek way of life.
How The Ancient Greeks Got Around
Traveling in the ancient world was much tougher than it is today. Although the technology that we use in the present age may seem antiquated or cumbersome (for instance, the fact that we still use massive boats to travel the oceans, or the fact that we stand in huge lines in order to get onto aircraft), our minor inconveniences are nothing compared to the difficulties that were faced by our ancestors. Ancient Greek transportation was some of the most advanced of the era, but there were still many problems with their methods.
One of the most important methods of transportation, to both the economy of the area as well as its people, was traveling by ship. As Greece is partially a group of islands, there was no way to get to the mainland of Europe by simply riding a horse or taking a chariot. Instead, anyone who wished to travel outside of Greece, or any traders who wanted to get materials from different parts of the world, had to use boats to get to their destinations. Additionally, this form of transportation made Greece the owner of one of the world’s most powerful naval fleets.
While boats were a preferred mode of transport for long distances, the average Greek didn’t need (or want) to leave their home area. For these normal citizens, the most common type of transportation was the mule. Horses were relatively unknown and rarely used in Greece or Rome, rather they tended to use mules for light transport of items and people, and oxen for heavier transportation needs.
